1959 - Alaska, 49th state admitted to the Union, capital Juneau. The region was purchased from the Russian Empire in 1867. Largest state of the United States, area 663,268 sq.mi. (1.717.854 km²). Mt. McKinley also named Denali (Native American name) and 'The Great One' with 20,320 ft. (6.193 m) the highest peak in the U.S. Alaska's orginal inhabitants includes mainly, Aleuts and Eskimos.
