Grenoble born, French Captain Don Joseph Bernard Vallière d'Hauterive appointed Commandant - under Spanish Rule - of the Arkansas Post on the Arkansas River near Gillett in Arkansas County, Arkansas. Arkansas Post initially a fort and trading post with the local Quapaw Native Americans, later a civilian hamlet, trading house and entrepot settled in 1686 by Henri de Tonti at Osotouy a Quapaw village. The first semi-permanent European colony in the Mississippi River Valley. For his services, the French Commandant received a land grand from the Spanish Crown of about 6,000,000 acres.

Union Army forces under Brigadier General Samuel R. Curtis defeated Confederate forces led by Major General Earl Van Dorn. Today Pea Ridge National Military Park is the most intact Civil War battlefield in the U.S.

Civil War Period

  1. Union troops destroyed Fort Hindman at the Arkansas Post in Arkansas, ensuring control of the Arkansas River.
  2. April 18, the Battle of Fayetteville fought, in Washington County, Arkansas. The Confederates under Brigadier General William L. Cabell failed to achieve their goal of driving Cololonel Marcus La Rue Harrison's Union forces out of Fayetteville. Shortly after the battle, Federal authorities ordered the abandonment of the Fayetteville post, but the Union troops returned in September.
