Bernard Vallière d'Hauterive appointed Commandant
- under Spanish Rule - of the Arkansas Post on the Arkansas
River near Gillett in Arkansas County, Arkansas. Arkansas
Post initially a fort and trading post with the local
Quapaw Native Americans, later a civilian hamlet, trading
house and entrepot settled in 1686 by Henri de Tonti
at Osotouy a Quapaw village. The first semi-permanent
European colony in the Mississippi River Valley. For
his services, the French Commandant received a land
grand from the Spanish Crown of about 6,000,000 acres.
