1, Battle of Cabin Creek (Union victory), Colonel James
M. Williams of the First Kansas Colored Infantry led
a Union supply train from Fort Scott, Kansas, to Indian
Territory, Fort Gibson, in Muskogee County, Oklahoma.
Confederate Colonel Stand Watie, with about 1,600 to
1,800 men intended to assault the Union troops at the
crossing of Cabin Creek, a stage station near present
Vinita in Mayes County. The Federal troops drove the
Confederates off with artillery fire and two cavalry
charges and the supply train arrived in Fort Gibson.
