Zachary Taylor, constructed a fort later named Fort
Brown at Brownsville (part of Matamoros) in Cameron
County, Texas.

May 8, the
Battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma were fought
nearby the Mexican city of Matamoros and Brownsville
in Cameron County, Texas. After attack of the Mexicans
of Fort Texas, General Zachary Taylor's troops, about
2,300 men, fought against the 6,000 Mexican invaders,
under General Mariano Arista. Heavy American artillery
attack, defeated the Mexicans who withdraw to Resaca
de la Palma. On May 13, the United States declared war
on Mexico, the US-Mexican War officially started. Zachary
Taylor became the 12th President of the United States
(1849-1850). Palo Alto became Palo Alto Battlefield
National Historic Site in 1978.
